Governor Palin's daughter is five months pregnant? So the McCain people either knew this, and have and are prepared to deal with the issue. . .or they did not know it.
I so hope it's the first possibility, because the second one tells me they didn't do their homework.

I think they knew. I think it will help the campaign in some ways. My initial response was probably the same as yours - oh no, how will this reflect on her ability to raise children, much less lead a nation? Bottom line is that this is NO reflection on Palin's parenting. Sure, parenting CAN have an influence on whether or not young people choose to engage in premarital sex but, let's face it. It can happen to a 30 year old and it's just as wrong as it is for a 17 year old. Some families who have had similar experiences will look at her and applaud her for having an imperfect family as we all do...
I have a 16 year old daughter. She's had a boyfriend for over a year. She also committed to purity. Does that mean that she won't ever slip? Of course not. What I've emphasized with her is that couples usually don't plan this. It happens when you're alone and get carried away... She's taken that to heart and so have the boys parents and us. While she's far from perfect, she often reminds me that I "could do worse. Mom, I don't smoke, don't do drugs or drink and I'm still a virgin...." Makes me overlook the B's when she could be making an A.....
